Year 12 Task- Introduction to Scripts

The script tells us that there will be a superimposed caption that explains the year, and the specific time in that year during the French revolution after Napoleon had been defeated and France is ruled by a king again. This introduces the setting and the time period. The script then begins a description of a Toulon port to add more detail to the setting. It describes the scene of a storm them states that there will be more super imposed text telling us where this port is. The script then goes on to describe what is happening in this scene. The script states that there are convicts pulling ropes that are attached to a man-of-war.
The script then introduces one of the main characters of the film, the convict Jean Valjean, it states that he is “a brute of man that seems to feel nothing”.  After doing so the script then gives us a hint to the genre of the film by stating the convicts are singing we know that the film will be a musical. The script then introduces another character, Javert the officer in charge of the work force. Is describes him “looking on, his face rain-lashed and expressionless”.

The setting was introduced with superimposed text that explains the time period and setting. The camera focuses on the one convict more than the other we assume this to be Jean Valjean. The camera then pans up from the bottom the top of the ship revealing Javert the camera shot tells us that Javert is the man in charge looking down on all of the convicts giving him a sense of power making the convicts seems small in comparison. The genre is conveyed through the music that is played as soon as the film starts after introducing the characters they then begin to sing. I was engaged by the clip because of the way the camera flew through the storm making it seem like an interesting setting and exciting.

Scarface script
This script states there is a narrator; the narrator explains the backstory of the film. We know that it’s a crime film because of the things the narrator says explaining the story of a “minority” known as the los bandidos. After this the script then introduces Tony Montana the main character. “close up of Tony Montana                                                                                                                           the scar-faced one, in the young angry prime of his life. We dwell first on the scar which he likes to scratch now and then. We move to the eyes, pure in their fury.  Finally we encompass the face”

The scripts are very different because of the way set out. The scene and the characters are introduced in different ways one using superimposed text the other using a narrator. Superimposed text works better for les miserables because of the genre of film not many musicals would use a narrator because it differs so much from the rest of the film. Whereas Scarface is a more action crime film the narrator works better

Crime Film trailer analysis

The first shot in the trailer tells us instantly that this is a crime film. The shot zooms in to four men wearing long black coats and as they open the coats they are all wearing body armour and all have guns. This follows the codes and conventions of a crime film with the use of guns and disguises. The music used in the trailer is fast paced and lively this indicates that this film will be action packed and also fast paced. The shot then fades to a black background with red text with the words "from Guy Ritchie director of lock stock and two smoking barrels” This is used because Guy Ritchie is a famous director that has directed a film in the same genre and people that have seen the previous films that he has directed may want to see this one.  The next few minutes of the trailer are used describe the story. The trailer is still very fast paced it often jumps to the different characters that are in the film while still describing the story. This sets the audience up for the hectic nature of this film. The film often jumps between several different characters that are all after the same thing, which is described as “a diamond the size of a fist “in the trailer, the trailer helps set up the feel of the film by cutting between the different characters and telling the brief parts of the story so nothing is spoilt. The whole trailer is narrated by Jason Statham much like the film. This gives the audience the impression that he is the main character in the film as he is the voice heard throughout the trailer. After the story has been explained it then shows the actors that are in this film. The music in this part changes to something that represents a Mexican stand off this tells the audience that all these characters are against each other in the search for this diamond. The film has a lot of well know actors in it. They are all stated at the end of the film to get the audience interested in it, if they see an actor that they like they may be really interested in going to see the film. The trailer also shows the comedy side of this film. There is a big part of this film where no can really understand Brad Pitt’s character and it offers up some really funny moments as show in the trailer. While watching this trailer it is easy to tell that it is a crime film it follows all the code and conventions. There is use of guns, it explains that the story is about a diamond worth lots of money, lots of actors that are featured in other crime films and it also has a crime boss that is feared and is looking for the diamond.

Dexter opening analysis

The scene starts with a black ground and then the title of the show appears. The colour then changes to a blood red and tense non-diegetic music starts to play. This sets the tone to introduce the main character Dexter, daytime blood spatter analyst for Miami metro night time serial killer, the background then fades to a close up of a puddle with the refection of the moon in it.  The red colour of the streetlights makes the puddle look like a puddle of blood. The shot then fades to a man driving a car there is very little light used so it is hard to make out the driver of the car. As the camera is focused on the shadowy figure a voice narrates the words “tonight’s the night, and it’s going to happen again and again” these word along with the tense music tell us that the man in the car looking of something or someone. the shot then changes to a close up of the car’s rear-view mirror only showing the eyes of the man driving the car his eyes are shifting from left to right indicating once again he is looking for someone. the narrator then starts to talk about the Miami life the night life and the food. “Miami is a great town I love the pork sandwiches” he says and after a pause says “But I’m hungry for something different now” as he says the shot then changes to a choir singing and the tense music stops. The camera then pans out until it sees the man leading the choir it then stops on him and the music plays again. There is then a shot of the man in the car with the choir in the distance. All this tells us the he has found the man he is looking for and tonight is the night that he satisfies his hunger for something different.

My favorite media text

i like to watch a lot of series hat are on TV. out of the many that I watch my favorite is Dexter. The series the life of a man called Dexter Morgan. he leads a normal, quiet life working as a forensic office for Miami metro . he has a shy girlfriend and is like by everyone that he meets. But he has a dark secret Dexter is an accomplished serial killer. this is one of my favorites because its unusual there are not many series out there that can get you to feel like you want him to always evade capture. The series can provide some tense moments as he is always trying to hide this secret. it is a really fantastic series with many twists and turns through out.
